This week in literacy, we will… 

  • Understand the concept of a contraction

  • Take apart compound words to read two smaller words

  • Read Zoom in and Out by Amanda Yskamp. We will search for and use information in text as well as in photographs, labels, sidebars and captions. We will also use contextual information to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words

  • Notice how authors and illustrators use illustrations, photographs, sidebars, and labels to give information about a topic

  • Write a list of steps for how to put on our snow gear during Community Writing time. We’ll hang our list in the hallway to help us get ready for recess!

  • Read Tools, by Ann Morris, Who Would Win: Hyena vs. Honey Badger by Jerry Pallotta, Owls by Gail Gibbons, Remarkable Reindeer by Jeff Bauer, and Penguins: Discover More by Penny Arlon. We will use nonfiction text features in these books to get more information

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons


In Writing this week, we will…

  • Begin our next unit of writing informational pieces 

  • Think about topics we know about and could teach someone about

  • “Tell information” across the pages by sketching and writing

  • Keep our readers in mind by answering popular questions about our topic




In math this week, we will…

- Represent addition on a number line

  • - Recognize and extend number patterns - Count to 120, starting with any number less than 120, including 0 or 1 - Read numerals to 120 - Count by 2s to 20



This week during our Social Studies time we will be reviewing behavior expectations in our classroom.  We will also be reading books about responsibility, respect, and friendship.
