Welcome to First Grade! I am looking forward to a wonderful year with all of you! Here is the scoop for our first week of school:
In Literacy, we will...
- Read a story titled, First Day Jitters
- Read a poem titled, Jitter Juice and sample a cup of jitter juice
- Read a story titled, David Goes to School, and begin co-creating our classroom behavior matrix
- Learn about some literacy centers
- Identify rhymes, isolate initial sounds and blend sounds in single-syllable words during a Heggerty Phonological Awareness lesson
- Learn that a name is a word and connect a name with other words by making a classroom name chart and noticing spelling patterns
In Math, we will...
- Count by 2's using a class created twin popsicle chart
- Notice patterns in numbers and counting
- Explore Math Workplaces, which will include pattern blocks, dominoes and unifix cubes
In Writing, we will...
- Read a story titled, Giraffes Can't Dance and discuss the "Power of Yet" and growth mindset
- Write about things we are good at and things we can't do...YET!
- Draw and label a picture about our favorite summer memory. We will write a sentence or two telling about our picture
- Draw and label a picture about our favorite thing about the first week of first grade. We will write a sentence or two telling about our picture
In Social Studies, we will...
- Meet our new friends, learn their names and build connections
- Play a game called, "Find a Friend Who..."
- Discuss class rules, expectations and routines
- Share our summertime photographs and memories
Announcements and Upcoming Events:
- Our class has Phy. Ed. on "A Days", Music on "B Days" and Art on "C Days"
- September 6: No School (Labor Day)
- September 17: Early Dismissal
- September 22: Picture Day
